Duplicate or Lost ASIP Serial Numbers
This section provides tips on what to do if duplicate serial numbers
are found on the network, or if a serial number is lost.
Duplicate serial number or conflict alerts
When the Web & File Server starts up, it checks the network for
other computers using the same serial number as the one registered
on your computer. If no matching serial number is found, your
serial number is encrypted and registered on the network. If the
Web & File Server detects a matching serial number, it displays
a message that a duplicate serial number has been found on the
network. When you click OK, the Web & File Server program quits.
This differs from earlier versions of AppleShare File Server software,
which allowed both file servers to operate, but sent out alerts
at increasingly frequent intervals.
Duplicate serial numbers sometimes occur if you're moving file
sharing services from one machine to another, and copy the Users
& Groups Data File (which stores the serial number) from one machine
to another.
Resolving the conflict
The AppleShare IP 6.0 license allows Web & File Services to be
run on one machine. To resolve the conflict of duplicate serial
numbers on the network, you must change the serial numbers on
one of the servers, or shut down Web & File Services on one of
the servers.
Lost Serial Numbers
If you can't find your ASIP serial number, these tips may help:
- The ASIP serial number came on adhesive stickers on the ASIP CD
Jacket, with recommendations to attach one of the stickers to
the ASIP manual. Check the CD jacket, and also the manuals for
the serial number.
- If you upgraded from version 4.x or 5.x of ASIP, you'll be using
the serial number that came with the previous version of the software,
which came on a greeting-card sized card.
- If the server is still running with the serial number, you can
locate it in Web & File Server Settings, using the Web & File
Admin program. It can be found under "Serialization."
- Serial numbers are stored in the Users & Groups data file. If
you have a backup of a Users & Groups data file, you can restore
it to the file server, and the serial number will be restored
with it. Then you can check in the Web & File Server Settings,
and write it down in a safe place.
